Man Trailing

Man Trailing can be as rewarding as Search and Rescue, it just has a different application. In Man Trailing the dog is always attached to the handler via a long line. He is in harness and expected to follow the specific scent given him at the start of his work. The dog will go through a crowd of people to find the specific one he is looking for. So the bad guy can run, but he can’t hide. It is thrilling to watch the lengths these dogs will go to, to “get their man” These dogs are not “attack” dogs. They are as likely to give the “sent mark” a big slurpy kiss, as not. If the subject of the search is a child or someone fearful of a dog it would not be prudent to give anything but a warm friendly greeting. When searching for the “bad guy” the man-dog team always has an armed law enforcement backup. It’s just the dog’s job to find his mark in the most expedient manner.
